Furtive Fundraising
B3ta has always had a clever-yet-subtle approach to encouraging donations. Donors get to choose a little icon to appear alongside their username, but only from the range available at the time of giving. So when a new batch of icons is released, you have to donate again to be able to use them.
There are countless examples out there demonstrating how willing people are to spend real money to enhance their presence in virtual worlds (Habbo, Second Life, etc.), but that same impulse can apply to something as small and simple as a forum icon.
