ISP DNS RIP
If you notice your net connection occasionally stuttering, especially at peak times, it might be related to the ISP’s DNS servers rather than the actual speed of data. It’s worth trying using someone else’s, e.g. OpenDNS (includes handy instructions), just in case it helps (switch back if it doesn’t, to avoid any future support confusion).
I’m mentioning this because I recently got TalkTalk broadband installed at home (yeah, I know they’re crap, but it’s a rented flat and the owner’s an existing customer, anything else would’ve taken months) and over the past couple of days web browsing has been grinding to a halt every now and then. I tracked down the problem to TalkTalk’s DNS servers; bypassing them has prevented the severe slowdowns.
