Yahoo!’s Rather Large Youth Club
Yahoo! Games always frustrates and impresses me.
The design is poor, it’s full of predictable old ‘favourites’, and most games are still Java-based. It’s also filled with enough kids and inane banter to bring out the latent Victor Meldrew in most sane adults.
But the crude graphics don’t get in the way of the game and chat mechanisms or increase download time. People are familiar with playing many of the classic games offline, so the site attracts a broader audience often frightened off by online gaming. It’s large enough to guarantee a variety of things to play and people to meet.
Any meeting place that regularly hosts 200,000 people of all ages from around the world has to be impressive. Even if it does look crap.
