Yesterday one of The Register’s ad suppliers was infected with a virus/worm, resulting in some visitors to the site being exposed to malicious code (the company involved has now issued a statement).
The exploit used allows an attacker to run software on your computer if you’re using Internet Explorer 6 on anything other than Windows XP with Service Pack 2 applied. It’s the latest in a long line of similar security holes.
If you’re still an IE user you’re probably a bit sick of all the preaching about alternative browsers such as Firefox and Opera; some people do go on. Unfortunately the truth is that by using IE you’re putting your PC at risk, and if you’re at work you’re endangering the entire business. Even if you need IE for specific systems, switch to another browser for general web browsing, it costs nothing and will significantly improve the security of your network overnight. Browse happy.
